Students at Hofstra are uniquely ambitious, driven and inspired. Many of them have great ideas for ways to improve Hofstra. But they also don’t know how they can get their message out and gather a group of people who would want to help them achieve that goal.
The easiest way to do this is by hosting a Cafe Conversation with the CCE. Any student, whether they are a fellow, consistent volunteer or just someone who wants to participate in the CCE for the first time, has the ability to pitch an idea for a Cafe Conversation and host it themselves.
The Center for Civic Engagement will help that student book a space, purchase pizza for everyone who attends, and set up any necessary equipment for the meeting. The student can invite guest speakers or host the conversation themselves on a topic that they feel is important to the Hofstra community. In the past, Cafe Conversation topics have included whether or not the mental health services offered at the Saltzman Center are adequate, why it is important that Hofstra consider gender-neutral housing options, and a discussion about the rhetoric surrounding immigrants in America.
Hofstra’s campus is full of passionate students who want to share their thoughts and ideas with the rest of their community. At a Cafe Conversation, a student has the ability to gather others together and inspire them on some issue, potentially finding many other passionate people who’d like to push that change forward.
So don’t be shy, stop by a CCE meeting in Hofstra Hall’s Parlor Room on any Wednesday at 5pm and we’d be happy to hear your ideas!
